Shawn M. Buchanan

Shawn’s practice is primarily focused on the preparation and prosecution of utility and design patent applications in the United States and internationally, including Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) Applications.  Shawn also has experience with patent appeal proceedings before the U.S. Patent Trial and Appeals Board (PTAB).  In addition, Shawn also has experience regarding validity and infringement opinions.

Shawn has consulted Fortune 500 companies as well as solo inventors and provides patent rights consultation and portfolio management to best suit the needs of each type of client.  Shawn also has over ten years of experience as an electrical engineer working in a variety of different technologies, which he is able to effectively leverage into his practice to focus on a wide range of patents.  A sampling of such technologies includes antennas, various types of sensors such as magnetic field sensors, electro-mechanical and mechanical systems, wireless communication systems, medical imaging systems, autonomous driving systems, and machine-learning.

Prior to joining Banner Witcoff, Shawn was a patent examiner for the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), where he gained valuable insight regarding the USPTO’s internal requirements and expectations.
