Hengyi Jiang focuses his practice on the preparation, prosecution, and strategic management of patents in the electronics and computer technology fields. He has a broad technical background encompassing wireless telecommunications, consumer electronics, video games, video coding, and software.
Hengyi represents a wide range of clients—from global consumer electronics companies to early-stage startups—in developing, protecting, and managing their patent portfolios. He has extensive experience guiding emerging companies through the patent harvesting process to secure protection for their core technologies. Leveraging his experience in district court litigation and inter partes review (IPR) proceedings, Hengyi approaches patent prosecution with a litigation-oriented perspective. He aims to obtain strong, litigation-ready patents with broad coverage and reinforced validity.
Hengyi has significant experience with standard-essential patents (SEPs). He has co-authored the article, “Standard-Essential Patents: Prosecution and Enforcement,” published by Thomson Reuters’ Practical Law Journal, addressing strategies for drafting, prosecuting, and enforcing SEPs. Notably, with a background in telecommunication engineering, Hengyi has drafted or prosecuted hundreds patent applications relating to 5G technology.
Before joining Banner Witcoff, Hengyi worked at a leading intellectual property law firm in the Washington, D.C. area, where he focused on patent preparation and prosecution. During law school, he served as a judicial intern to the Honorable Craig Mitchell of the Superior Court of Los Angeles County and as a research assistant to Professor Russell A. Miller.
