Hengyi Jiang

Hengyi represents a diverse range of clients, from global consumer electronics companies to emerging startups, in the development, protection, and strategic management of their patent portfolios. He has extensive experience managing large-scale portfolios comprising more than 800 patent applications and regularly advises companies on patent harvesting strategies to identify and protect innovations that are central to their business objectives.

In addition to his patent prosecution practice, Hengyi has experience in patent litigation and post-grant proceedings, including ex parte reexaminations (EPRs) and inter partes reviews (IPRs). He has analyzed asserted patents, developed invalidity positions, and crafted patent strategies in the context of high-stakes disputes. Drawing on this experience, Hengyi approaches patent prosecution with a litigation-oriented perspective. He aims to obtain strong, litigation-ready patents with broad coverage and reinforced validity.

Hengyi has significant experience with standard-essential patents (SEPs). He has co-authored the article, “Standard-Essential Patents: Prosecution and Enforcement,” published by Thomson Reuters’ Practical Law Journal, addressing strategies for drafting, prosecuting, and enforcing SEPs. Notably, with a background in telecommunication engineering, Hengyi has drafted or prosecuted hundreds patent applications relating to 5G technology.

Before joining Banner Witcoff, Hengyi worked at a leading intellectual property law firm in the Washington, D.C. area, where he focused on patent preparation and prosecution. During law school, he served as a judicial intern to the Honorable Craig Mitchell of the Superior Court of Los Angeles County and as a research assistant to Professor Russell A. Miller.
