Recognized as one of Chicago’s most notable women lawyers in 2018, Katie Laatsch Fink represents clients in litigation and provides counseling on a broad range of issues involving patents, trademarks, trade dress, copyrights and trade secrets. Her representations include a top travel search engine, a popular online restaurant-reservation service, a microphone and audio electronics manufacturer, and a leader of outdoor lifestyle products, among others.

Litigation Experience:

Katie has significant experience managing and litigating intellectual property matters. Knowledgeable in all aspects of litigation from discovery and motion practice to trial and appeal, she has successfully achieved her clients’ business goals in enforcing intellectual property rights and defending against infringement allegations.

Katie’s litigation achievements include:

  • obtaining a jury verdict finding trademark infringement and dilution,
  • defending against numerous motions for summary judgment of invalidity and non-infringement,
  • obtaining summary judgments of invalidity and no inequitable conduct,
  • securing favorable rulings with respect to discovery disputes and motions in limine, and
  • negotiating favorable resolutions short of summary judgment or trial.

Trademark Experience:

Katie actively manages the trademark portfolios for several clients — from start-ups to large corporations. She counsels clients in protecting trademark rights and procurement of trademark registrations in the U.S. and internationally, and provides client-oriented strategies for coverage of rights. She also manages trademark opposition proceedings globally and has achieved numerous decisions resulting in favorable outcomes for her clients.

Accolades and Activities:

In 2018, Crain’s featured Katie in its “Chicago’s Notable Women Lawyers,” a special section recognizing senior-level women in law who have made significant contributions to the industry. Super Lawyers has recognized Katie as an Illinois Rising Star for six consecutive years from 2013-2019. The Rising Stars list represents the top 5 percent of attorneys in each state. Super Lawyers has also included Katie on its Top Women Illinois Lawyers list.

As a member of the International Trademark Association, the American Intellectual Property Law Association and the Intellectual Property Law Association of Chicago, Katie speaks and writes on various intellectual property topics.

At Banner Witcoff, Katie co-chairs the recruiting committee, leading the firm’s efforts to recruit top lateral candidates and summer associates. She also is a member of the committee that oversees the firm’s trademark practice and previously served on the diversity and associates committees.

Katie earned her Juris Doctor, cum laude, from Northwestern University School of Law. While in law school, she served as a judicial extern for the Hon. Amy J. St. Eve of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. She earned a Bachelor of Science in engineering, magna cum laude, from the University of Pennsylvania, where she focused her studies in systems science and engineering. Prior to becoming an attorney, Katie worked as a program analyst for Lockheed Martin Information Technology under a contract with the Federal Aviation Administration.

Based in Chicago, Katie is admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of Illinois, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, and the U.S. District Courts for the Northern District of Illinois, the Western District of Texas, and the Eastern District of Wisconsin. She also is registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office as a patent attorney.
