Joseph M. Potenza was elected as the American Bar Association Section of Intellectual Property Law (ABA-IPL) Representative to the ABA House of Delegates during the organization’s Annual Meeting in Boston, Aug. 6-12, 2014. He will serve a three-year term, expiring in 2017.
With 25,000 members, the ABA-IPL Section is the largest intellectual property organization in the world and the oldest substantive section of the ABA. Mr. Potenza is the Immediate Past Chairman of the ABA-IPL. He previously served as Section Chairman-Elect and Vice Chairman. He formerly served as the Publications Officer and as former Chairman of the Content Advisory Board. He also served as Secretary of the ABA-IPL for three years and on the Section Council for four years.
Mr. Potenza has served as a member and officer of several other ABA committees and initiatives. He is a former member of the ABA Standing Committee on the Federal Judiciary. He was the Co-Chairman of the ABA Patent Trial Advocacy Institute, Chairman of the ABA Trademark Litigation Institute, and Council Member and Director of the ABA Young Lawyers Division. He is the past Chairman of the ABA Section of Science and Technology.
Mr. Potenza is a senior shareholder in the Washington, D.C., office of Banner & Witcoff. He concentrates in litigation, Section 337 investigations at the U.S. International Trade Commission, licensing, counseling on patent and copyright matters, and the preparation and prosecution of patent and copyright applications. He is a founding member, Past President and Master of the Giles S. Rich American Inn of Court, and has been an adjunct professor of law at Georgetown University Law Center since 1985.
