Embracing Illinois District’s Trial Bar Pro Bono Duties: Christian Wolfgram Quoted in Bloomberg Law

Banner Witcoff’s Christian Wolfgram spoke with Bloomberg Law on the Northern District of Illinois’ program appointing trial lawyers to provide bro bono legal services to indigent litigants. The article discusses the benefits pro bono work provides younger associates and senior partners.

“I did not have the opportunity to first chair a deposition before working on these pro bono cases. And I’ve done eight now in the pro bono context, and that directly then equips me with the skills to be able to do my first billable client deposition,” said Wolfgram.

In June, Wolfgram successfully represented plaintiff Cory (“Harli”) Gregory in litigation against defendants, Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC) officials, in the United States District Court in the Northern District of Illinois. The lawsuit, filed in 2018 under the Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act of 2000 (RLUIPA) and the Illinois Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA), alleged that the defendants violated Gregory’s rights to practice her religion.
