Mr. McDermott's experience includes serving as in-house counsel at Ford Motor Company. He earned his J.D., with honors, from Suffolk University Law School in 1978. He earned his B.S. in Chemical Engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute where he has served as an Executive Board member and Chair of the WPI Venture Forum, a non-profit program supporting pre-start up and early stage technology-based businesses.
Mr. McDermott is a member of several state and federal district and appellate court bars, including Massachusetts and Michigan. He serves as a core member of the faculty for the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation's Global Scholars Program. Through this program, Mr. McDermott teaches American intellectual property law to young entrepreneurs selected from European engineering, science, and technology scholars. Mr. McDermott serves in appointed positions on the Lawyer Referral Service Committee and the Media Committee of the Massachusetts Bar Association. He is also a member of the Intellectual Property Owners Association, where he serves as a member of the IP Licensing Committee. Mr. McDermott was named by Intellectual Asset Management magazine as one of the World’s Leading Patent & Technology Licensing Lawyers, and was selected for inclusion in the 2014 edition of The Best Lawyers in America. Best Lawyers is considered the oldest and most respected national peer-review publication in the legal profession, and is based on an annual peer-review survey.
